Career

Miyou Yamada started her art education immediately after graduating with a Teaching Art Degree from Seihin Women College in Tokyo. She studied watercolors with Professor Yoshi Kato, who had received Silver Prize in France for his watercolor painting. While studying, her interest in sumi-e (ink painting) emerged. She then started studying sumi-e with Mr. Masuki Nanpo who was awarded an Order of the Rising Sun, sixth class, from the Emperor.

After many years of intensive training in sumi-e art, Miyou became a member of the Shijo Maruyama School and received the name MIYOU YAMADA in 1979 from the 20th Head of the Maruyama School.

She continued learning sumi-e painting from Mr. Nanpo until his death. She then studied under the 21st Head of Maruyama School, the son of Mr. Nanpo, while serving as the assistant teacher of the school. She taught sumi-e painting from 1979 until 2002 and continues to teach occasionally.

Miyou specialized particularly in sumi-e of flowers, but also paints birds, people, animals, the moon, and various other subjects in sumi-e. Her art is characterized by gracefulness through strong and tender sumi-e lines.
